Dear Yuletide Writer
Hi, I'm Niki, and this is my long and rambly request/Dear Writer post.
The most important things first: thank you for writing me a story, I hope you can have fun doing it!:)
This is where I'll get rambly about my requests (some are basically recycled from last year), then there are some general likes and dislikes at the end of the post.
Peter O'Donnell: Modesty Blaise - book or comic (Any) (but when book and comic worlds disagree, I tend to think the book version is the 'right' one, just because I read the books first. And I'm in denial about Cobra Trap.)
I'm easy. I've never seen any Modesty fic, so anything you want to write would be pretty much fine. If you have a story you've been dying to write for the fandom, here's your excuse:) But, to offer you some suggestions, here are some things I have been wondering about...
I love Modesty and Willie's relationship. I do. And I think it's perfect. And yet... I have always wondered whether someone could pull off writing a romantic and/or sexual relationship between them. (Maybe it's the same instinct that makes me a slasher? The whole, 'what if...?';) Not a complete AU changing things from the beginning, but working from the existing relationship in, say, around the time of Modesty Blaise or after. But well after the Network years because the relationship was different then. I mean, what would it take to change the status quo? Threatening marriage? Drug administered by a bad guy? Fatal illness? Disco ball falling on someone's head? Then again, I would probably feel guilty for reading such a story...
Or it would be lovely to witness another one of their 'private' moments (like the one in the beginning of The Impossible Virgin with the impromptu ballet dance) when they 'play', or some crazy caper with an impossible ploy to steal something. Or a private father/daughter type scene with Modesty and Sir G. Like the flying trip Modesty promises to take Sir G to in Dragon's Claw. Or... Well, hell, anything that shows off the closeness between the characters. Bonus points for Weng and the Colliers.
Which reminds me, one missing scene I would love to see is how Dinah and Steve got together in A Taste for Death. Flustered Steve and determined Dinah... both apologetic for falling for someone else's bedmate...;)
Well, like I said. I'm easy. I'llprobably definitely go squee whatever you write. I know my suggestions have been about very few characters but I chose 'any character' and I mean 'any character'. I'd be very happy to see *anything* in this fandom, even if it isn't something I'd expect. Lighthearted would be nice, happy ending a minimum requirement. I'll talk more about that in my 'general likes and dislikes' at the end of the post. Oh, and I notice all of my specific ideas come from the books. Don't let that limit yourself. I'll be equally happy with anything that stems from the comic canon because all the important bits are the same, anyway.
Miami Vice (TV) (Sonny/Rico) For me, the movie doesn't exist.
There are some great stories out there but so very few ever made it online. So I'm hungry for anything, really. And the relationship between Rico and Sonny is more interesting to me than complicated crime-solving plots. I don't even really care whether the relationship is romantic or friendly because it is so intense in the canon anyway. Anything that portrays that would be lovely, no matter which direction you take it in.
Though, of course, slash would be awesome:) I love them together. More about what I love in love stories in the general notes at the end of this post.
Now, some suggestions... Sonny the Father is always something precious. Sonny and Rico relaxing together after a difficult assignment is always nice. All the scenes that we don't see after the credits start rolling...
Bonus points for Elvis, and Castillo kicking ass - literally or figuratively;)
Battlestar Galactica (classic) (Apollo/Starbuck)
Starbuck. Starbuck, Starbuck, Starbuck. And Apollo. Preferably together. Love, family, friendship, whatever. Closeness anyway.
Such great potential for angst but I don't want an angsty story in December. (I've got issues, sorry.) Okay, angst is fine as long as I still get my happy ending.
Even if you don't go for slash, I'd prefer if you didn't go into detail about them in romantic relationships with others. I don't mind family relationships as a focus, I don't even mind kids (or daggits) but I'd really really love it to include the close relationship between the two men.
Post-Destruction rather then pre, but I don't much care for finding Earth. Sounds heartless, doesn't it?;) Something Starbuck-centric would be nice. Maybe something from his past blowing up in their faces? Or just something that lets people see he's more than the shallow exterior.
And finally, no demonising the female characters, please, if you can avoid it!
Earth 2 (Devon Adair/John Danziger)
If you've read through my other requests, you might have figured that I'm big on relationships. So, for this too, I'm basically looking for something relationship-centric. Again, I don't care if it's a friendship or a romantic relationship, sparks would fly in both!
I'd love a story that explored the developing trust, respect and friendship between Devon and Danz, and maybe even more. Hot sex is of course hot;) Founding the colony and living happily ever after would be sweet, too. (Though their 'happily ever after' could only be... explosive;)
General Likes and Dislikes aka What I Look for in a Story
- Any rating is fine. I don't require NC-17 but I don't avoid it either, be the rating for sex, violence, or bad language. I usually prefer vanilla-kind of sex, though.
- I don't have many outright squicks, and not many that would apply here, but one I've only recently identified is my huge embarrassment squick. I can't watch some comedies because I so intensely dislike seeing the main characters in embarrassing situations. I kinda like the hero who's always on top of things;)
- Pure smut isn't usually my thing. Plot-related sex is fine (and fun) but I don't need it to be described in detail, that's not where I get my kicks from. I have been known to skip long paragraphs of sex to get to the next line of dialogue. That's where the characterisation is done, that's where the relationships unfurl. That's where you hit my heart.
- I generally prefer lighthearted stories, especially around December. That said, I love good angst - as long as it ends happily. No 'hurt' without 'comfort'. I'm a sucker for happy endings. So no pain-filled death stories, pretty please. Did I stress the importance of leaving me smiling enough yet?;) Still, a doze of angst makes the eventual happy ending that much sweeter.
- Actually, if you could avoid killing anyone the characters care about that would be nice. Not their parents, grandparents or even distant cousins. Death and Yule have very bad connotations in my mind.
- I love long plot-driven adventures that have a developing relationship on the side (and doesn't end with the "but I love *you*", "I love you too!" "Let's have sex!"; I want to see what happens *after* that, too. And I don't just mean the sex...;). But as I know long, plotty adventures are hard to fit into 1000 words, I tried to offer suggestions for shorter one scene type of stories. Which would make me equally happy. I love missing scenes! (Well, show me a ficcer who doesn't...)
- I love first time stories, and different type of 'coming out' scenarios: coming out in the classic sense of coming out of the closet as gay, to your love interest or with him (other people finding out about main characters' relationship), having your secret (secret identity, powers, race (as in, alien), immortality, etc.) revealed, etc. etc. These type of 'coming outs' are equally interesting in gen/het stories.
- Humour is a plus but I'd prefer not the get an outright parody. Witty dialogue makes my day, any day!
- As you might have guessed by now, I love romantic stories. But a sap-overload just sounds very OOC for most characters. Realism even in mush is the way to go! (And something more than the traditional "A wants B but thinks he can't have them, B wants A but thinks he can't have them, angst ensues, then C happens which forces them to reveal their feelings, and it all ends with declarations of love and instant sex.")
- In the end, I'd rather get a story you really like to write, even if it's not quite what I've talked about, than a story you need to sweat out in blood to fit my crazy requests. I hope you can have fun writing for me:)
- There's a Fan Fiction Pet Peeves entry on my other journal, if you're interested in reading about me bitching.
My mom is waxing lyrical over a Yule vacation in the middle of nowhere, so if we decide to indulge her I have no idea whether I'll actually have Net access during the reveal (it depends on the weather). But I'll read, comment and love as soon as I get back to the civilised world!
Happy Yuletide, dear writer, and I'm looking forward to your story!
